THE BIOTECHNOLOGY FOR EUROPE STUDY
Following a request of the European Parliament, the European Commission is carrying out an assessment of modern biotechnology and an evaluation of its consequences, opportunities and challenges for Europe in terms of economic, social and environmental aspects. The study will constitute the primary input to the reflection on the role of the Life Sciences and Biotechnology in the renewed Lisbon Agenda.

BIO4EU Symposium

Consequences, opportunities and challenges

of modern biotechnology for Europe

To conclude the Bio4EU study, the European Commission (DG JRC/IPTS in collaboration with the Secretariat General) organised a Symposium on 20 April 2007 in Brussels, in order to present the main findings of the study and to discuss them, in particular in the context of a revised EU Strategy on Life Sciences and Biotechnology. Around one hundred participants - including policy-makers, stakeholders and academia - attended the event.

The Symposium included interactive sessions dedicated to the three main application areas of biotechnology: human medicine and healthcare; primary production and agro-food; industrial production processes, energy and environment.

For further details, please see the final agenda, the synthesis report (Consequences, Opportunities and Challenges of Modern Biotechnology for Europe) and the presentations made at this event.
